Introducing Greenwood Eldercare Society's Executive Director

Hello, my name is Paul Oliphant. I am pleased to introduce myself as the new Executive Director for Greenwood’s Eldercare Society. I retired in 2009 after working for 30 years as a Child and Family Psychologist and Mental Health Administrator in the Calgary area. My wife Judith and I have been enjoying the benefits of retired life here on Salt Spring Island since that time. When we first started living here full time I volunteered for Meals on Wheels and then joined the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation where I recently served as Board Chair. In addition, I also served as Chair of the Salt Spring Health Advancement Coalition for two years.

It hadn’t been my intention to seek employment but the Greenwoods opportunity seemed like one that I couldn’t pass up given my love for organizational reform and re-energizing. I have spent my entire career in health care and I knew from the Salt Spring Health Coalition work that services for seniors was identified as a top priority for the island. It just seemed like the right time for me to get more intensely involved in helping to provide optimal care for seniors on Salt Spring. I was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit Michigan (I have both US and Canadian citizenship). I did my undergraduate degree at Michigan State University, my graduate work at University of Waterloo, and internship at the University of Manitoba Health Sciences Centre. My wife Judith and I have been married for 39 years and are the proud parents of three adult children and a seven-year-old granddaughter- all who live in the Vancouver area.

I am very excited about the opportunity to work with the great staff at Greenwoods, resident’s families, the Board of Directors, and the Foundation. My focus will be on building strong relationships, effective teams, and healthy partnerships both within the organization as well as with other groups that serve seniors. I am confident that working together we can ensure that Greenwood’s is a warm, caring, and compassionate home for our most vulnerable and venerable residents of Salt Spring.
