The Greenwoods Eldercare Society Recreation Department offers a diverse calendar of meaningful and therapeutic activities for our Greenwoods and Braehaven residents. We have a dedicated team of over 50 volunteers that enrich our programs and services. Our Volunteers are a critical component of our recreation programs and their compassion, understanding and kindness enhance the resident’s lives every day.

Each month we have a core program of regular events and happenings as well as many special in-house programs that are seasonal or focused on a special event or opportunity such as: the sunshine breakfast, hamburger/salmon BBQ’s, special spring breakfast, magic shows, clothing sale, special choirs and recitals, visits from a miniature horse, bottle-fed lamb visits, ice cream/hot chocolate socials, accordion music and live radio shows which are always a highlight. Be sure to check out the latest by picking up one of our
monthly newsletters and a calendar of events.

Thanks to the generosity of our Lady Minto Hospital Auxiliary, we have been able to offer our extremely popular therapy programs (art, music and exercise) which are totally funded by the Lady Minto Hospital Auxiliary. Our facilitators consist of an educated, talented and compassionate team that specialize in therapies tailored to the resident’s needs, interests and abilities. We offer these programs in group settings and on a one to one basis to assist with activating and maintaining dexterity, concentration, memory, social skills and to ensure the residents have the opportunity to be engaged in meaningful and fun social and recreation events throughout the week. We are hoping to add horticultural therapy that will take place in the newly improved and/or developed garden areas in the courtyard, side garden adjacent to Braehaven and front garden adjacent to Blain Road.

In addition to in-house programs we continue to enjoy many exciting excursions on and off island with our residents on our accessible bus. Some of our favorite events and destinations include: lunch at Crow and Gate in Yellowpoint, the Chemainus theatre, picnic at the castle, Music and Munch, the SSI Fall Fair, shopping at the Lady Minto Hospital thrift store, Legion socials and Christmas light tours. The bus trips are looked forward to by residents and are a wonderful opportunity for them to get into their community and enjoying interesting locations from Duncan to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.

As an important part of our programming, each year we host our Annual Christmas Craft and Bake Sale Fundraiser. Our residents work on art and craft projects during programmed activity sessions - but also spend a lot of time creating all on their own, often creating projects that are based on lifelong interests, hobbies and skills. This sale has been a focal point for the residents that has brought meaning and purpose to their efforts and creativity. Our event has also established a following within our community and we have many annual shoppers excited to come and pick out their handmade original art and craft items while supporting our residents. With our phenomenal team of residents, their families, volunteers, staff and friends we raised over $4,800 from our 2013 sale and 100% of these funds are used to support special entertainment, program supplies and items that directly improve the comfort, care and experience of residents. Please watch for announcements for the Craft Sale that is held each November at Braehaven Assisted Living. We are very proud to share that over our five years of hosting this sale we have raised over $20,000 - all of which has been invested back into recreation programs and services.

We are very grateful for the dedication and kindness of our Greenwoods Eldercare Society team and the ongoing support of our Salt Spring Island community. With everyone working together, we have been able to make both Greenwoods and Braehaven a loving and comfortable home for our elders.
